Warmth is about something entirely different: how the message makes the reader feel while understanding it - whether it reads as blaming, cold, or genuinely considerate of their situation. WHY THEY MEASURE DIFFERENT THINGS ENTIRELY ------------------------------ A message can be extremely easy to parse - short, direct, unambiguous - while still carrying blame-implying word choice or omitting any acknowledgment of the reader's own situation, both of which affect warmth without affecting clarity at all. Conversely, a message could be warm and considerate in tone while still being confusingly written, buried in unnecessary detail, or structurally hard to follow - warm, but not clear. WHY THIS MEANS ONE CAN BE PRESENT WITHOUT THE OTHER ------------------------------ Since the two properties are checked against entirely different criteria (does the reader understand quickly, versus does the reader feel respected), nothing about improving one automatically improves or guarantees the other. Chapter 1's own furious-user scenario is the concrete proof: per this chapter, "the original message was technically accurate" and, implicitly, clear enough to be understood - the user clearly grasped what had happened - yet still reacted with fury, meaning the message failed entirely on warmth despite succeeding on clarity. WHY THIS FOLLOWS THE SAME PATTERN CHAPTER 1 ALREADY ESTABLISHED ------------------------------ Per this chapter, this is "exactly the 'two different achievements' pattern this course established back in Chapter 1" - accuracy and being understood were established as separable there; clarity and warmth are a further, more specific instance of the same underlying principle that two seemingly related qualities of communication can genuinely vary independently of one another.
