Chapter 1 promised a fuller telling of this story — the real origin of the Three Laws of Robotics, one of the most famous pieces of fictional ethical code ever written, and one whose real authorship even its own creators never fully agreed on.

The Text Itself

First Fully Stated in "Runaround," 1942

The Three Laws of Robotics were first stated together, in their complete form, in the short story "Runaround," written in October 1941 and published in Astounding Science Fiction in March 1942:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

A Later Addition: The Zeroth Law

Decades later, Asimov added a "Zeroth Law," ranking above the original First Law in priority: "A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm."

Which book actually introduced it? Sources genuinely disagree — most accounts credit the 1985 novel Robots and Empire, where the robot R. Daneel Olivaw first arrives at the idea. A more precise account holds that Daneel only names the underlying concept there — the Law itself isn't formally, explicitly stated until the later novels Foundation and Earth (1986) and Prelude to Foundation (1988). Both versions are worth knowing rather than picking one as the single settled answer.

Asimov and Campbell: A Genuinely Ambiguous Collaboration

23 December 1940

Asimov credited a conversation with his editor, John W. Campbell, on 23 December 1940, with crystallizing the Three Laws into their final form.

Two men, two different accounts of who deserves credit — Asimov said Campbell formulated the Laws in that conversation. Campbell, for his part, said the underlying concepts were already present in Asimov's own stories, and that he'd simply made them explicit. Asimov's own friend, fellow writer Randall Garrett, proposed calling it a genuinely "symbiotic" joint creation — a framing Asimov himself later adopted rather than settling the dispute either way. Treat this as a real, openly acknowledged ambiguity, not a resolved question.

The Frankenstein Complex

Asimov coined the term "the Frankenstein complex" for the "robots inevitably turn on their creators" trope that dominated science fiction before him. He wrote his own robot stories explicitly to push back against it — robots as safe, law-constrained tools rather than an inevitable menace — while still using in-story public fear of robots, under that same name, as a recurring theme woven through his own fiction, even though the Three Laws' safeguards made that fear largely unfounded within the stories themselves.

Before Asimov: Čapek's Robots

R.U.R., 1920

The word "robot" itself was coined by Czech writer Karel Čapek, with input from his brother Josef, in the 1920 play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), which premiered in January 1921 — from the Czech word robota, meaning forced labor, itself derived from rab, meaning slave. Robots in R.U.R. and in similar fiction that followed were typically depicted as a real threat to their creators — the exact trope Asimov's own robot stories were written to answer.

Coining "Robotics" by Accident

Asimov is credited with coining the word "robotics" itself — the science and technology of robots — with its first recorded use, per the Oxford English Dictionary, appearing in his own short story "Liar!," published in Astounding Science Fiction in May 1941.

He didn't realize he'd invented a word — Asimov later said he'd simply assumed "robotics" already existed as a real term, reasoning by analogy to other "-ics" scientific fields like physics and mathematics. He wasn't aware, at the time, that he'd actually coined it.

Real-World Influence and Real-World Critique

The Three Laws have had genuine, documented influence beyond fiction, regularly cited in real discussions of AI ethics, robotics safety, and policy frameworks. They're also genuinely critiqued by real experts as impractical for actual implementation — terms like "harm" and "injure" are ambiguous and deeply context-dependent, not the kind of thing that can be directly specified in working code. Asimov himself wrote the Laws with deliberate loopholes and edge cases built in — not as a genuine engineering specification, but precisely to generate the plot conflict his stories needed.
