Korean Political History I: Chapter 2, Exercise 3 — Possible Solution ====================================================================== TASK Choose one figure or date that is single-source or given differently, and say why you would hesitate and what would settle it. WORKED EXAMPLE: the rice price CLAIM Rice prices rose from 9.4 yen to 2,800 yen during the military government. WHY HESITATE - It comes from one source. - The chapter does not say the period it covers, the unit, or the market. - A rise this large depends on which price is quoted, and I could not check it. WHAT WOULD SETTLE IT An independent source with the dates, the unit and the location of the prices, ideally from records of the period. OTHER CANDIDATES - The date of the North's founding: one source says 10 July 1948; the same Soviet Civil Administration summary also says Kim Il Sung became premier on 9 September 1948, and mentions August 1948 elections. Look for a source that separates proclamation, election and government formation. - The Soviet cutoff of power to the south (single source).
