Chinese Political History II: Chapter 9, Exercise 1 — Possible Solution ======================================================================= TASK "The US agrees that Taiwan is part of China." Using the 1972 Shanghai Communique wording, explain what is wrong and rewrite the sentence. WHAT IS WRONG The 1972 wording says the US "acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China" and "does not challenge that position." That reports a position held on both sides. It does not say the US agrees Taiwan is part of the PRC. The source describes the US as recognizing the PRC as China's sole legal government while treating Taiwan's status as undetermined and keeping unofficial relations with Taiwan. "Acknowledges" is not "endorses." REWRITE "In the 1972 Shanghai Communique the United States 'acknowledged' that Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait hold there is one China and did not challenge that position, without stating that Taiwan is part of the PRC." CAUTION I verified only the 1972 wording. Later US documents were not checked.
