Chinese Political History II: Chapter 6, Exercise 1 — Possible Solution ======================================================================= TASK Compare Xi's 2012 takeover with the Jiang-to-Hu handover post by post, and say what the difference did to the timing of his control of the military. TABLE Post Jiang -> Hu Hu -> Xi General Secretary Nov 2002 15 Nov 2012 CMC chair Sep 2004 Nov 2012 President Mar 2003 14 Mar 2013 WHAT DIFFERED Hu became general secretary in November 2002 but did not chair the Central Military Commission until September 2004, so for about two years Jiang kept control of the military. Xi took the CMC chair in the same month as the party post (November 2012), because Hu gave up all his positions at once. EFFECT ON TIMING Xi held the party and the military at the same time from the first month of his tenure. Hu did not have that for two years. The president's post followed about four months later in both cases. CAUTION The sources give only "November 2012" for the CMC chair, so do not claim a same-day transfer.
