WHAT VIRTUAL DESKTOPS ACTUALLY SEPARATE ------------------------------ Per this chapter, Task View "manages entirely separate virtual desktops - each with its own independent set of open windows," used to "separate different tasks (say, focused work vs. communication apps) onto entirely different desktops." WHY THESE SOLVE DIFFERENT PROBLEMS ------------------------------ Snap Layouts solves the problem of viewing multiple windows at the same time, on screen simultaneously. Virtual desktops solve a different problem entirely: separating unrelated groups of windows so they aren't all visible or competing for taskbar space at once, switching between entire contexts rather than rearranging windows within one. A window snapped into a layout is still just one window occupying one region of one desktop - it says nothing about which virtual desktop it lives on. WHY THEY GENUINELY WORK TOGETHER RATHER THAN OVERLAPPING ------------------------------ Per this chapter, "each one able to use its own Snap Layout arrangement independently" - a user could snap two windows side by side on a "focused work" virtual desktop using Snap Layouts, switch to a completely different "communication apps" virtual desktop with its own, separate Snap Layout arrangement of different windows, and switch back to find the first arrangement exactly as it was left.
