This chapter opens Course 2 with a real, deliberate stylistic reset — a new generation of composers actively rejecting much of what the Baroque era had just spent a century and a half building.

The Classical era, spanning roughly 1750 to 1820, marks a genuine, documented turn away from Baroque complexity. Where Baroque music favoured multiple interweaving melodic lines, Classical composers favoured a predominantly homophonic texture — one clear melody, supported by a subordinate chordal accompaniment. The Mannheim school introduced real, genuinely novel orchestral techniques largely unheard of in the Baroque era: a controlled, graduated orchestral crescendo spanning the entire ensemble together, and the "Mannheim rocket" — a rapidly rising, arpeggiated melodic figure paired with a crescendo. This specific device was real and influential enough that Mozart himself later used it directly in the fourth movement of his own Symphony No. 40. The Mannheim orchestra also helped establish the real, standard four-movement symphony (including a minuet as its third movement), gave wind instruments genuinely more independent musical material, and abandoned basso continuo outright — publishing their own influential scores that carried these innovations to Paris and London.

Sonata Form: A New Real Structural Backbone

Classical composers developed sonata form as a real, reusable structural framework, reconciling the era's own preference for clear, singable melody with genuine harmonic development and contrast — typically an exposition presenting the main musical themes, a development section exploring and transforming them, and a recapitulation returning to the original material, now resolved in the home key. This became the real structural backbone for symphonies, sonatas, and chamber works throughout the era, and the direct foundation Chapter 2's own Haydn and Mozart built their careers upon.
