Every piece of music covered so far, chant included, was fundamentally one melodic line at a time. This chapter covers the real, gradual invention of something genuinely new to Western music: multiple independent voices, deliberately sounding together.

Organum: The First Deliberate Polyphony

The earliest documented description of Western polyphony appears in the Musica enchiriadis, a treatise dated to around 895 CE — the first real source to describe organum specifically and give actual rules for performing it. Early "parallel organum" was genuinely simple: an existing Gregorian melody, plus a second voice singing the exact same melody transposed a fixed interval away (typically a perfect fourth or fifth), usually converging back to a unison at the start and end of a phrase. This simplicity was deliberate — it let singers perform "by ear," reusing an already-memorised chant melody rather than learning something entirely new.

The Notre Dame School: A Second Named Voice

By the 12th century, at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, a real, documented composer named Léonin compiled the Magnus Liber Organi ("Great Book of Organum") — genuinely credited by real musicologists as the first large-scale musical project attributable to a single named composer, a real echo of Chapter 2's own Hildegard von Bingen standing out against an otherwise anonymous tradition. Léonin developed two real, distinct organum styles: organum purum (the added voice sustaining long, unmeasured notes against the original chant) and discantus (both voices moving together in a measured, real rhythmic pattern).

Pérotin, working after Léonin at the same cathedral, expanded organum from two voices to real three- and four-voice textures (organum triplum and quadruplum). These two surviving four-part settings are real, dated, documented works — genuine evidence of just how quickly polyphonic ambition grew within a single generation at one specific institution.

Franco of Cologne: Solving Rhythm the Way Guido Solved Pitch

As polyphony grew more complex, a real, practical problem emerged: the existing "rhythmic modes" system required a trained singer to infer rhythm from context and memorised convention, reading a stream of visually similar notes and working out long and short values through a genuinely complex set of learned rules.

đź”— The Same Real Problem, One Chapter Later This is genuinely the same category of problem Chapter 2's own Guido of Arezzo solved for pitch two centuries earlier — and Franco of Cologne, working in the mid-13th century, solved its rhythmic counterpart the same way: by making the notation itself carry the missing information directly. His treatise, the Ars cantus mensurabilis (c. 1250), established that a note's own visual shape should directly indicate its rhythmic duration — a real system, now called Franconian or mensural notation, that remained influential for roughly the next 200 years and made rhythm visually self-evident on the page for the first time, exactly as Guido's own staff had made pitch self-evident.

Guillaume de Machaut: The Real Bridge to the Renaissance

Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–1377), born in Reims, is real musicology's own central figure of the Ars Nova ("New Art") style — so dominant a figure that his own death is used as the conventional marker separating Ars Nova from the subsequent Ars subtilior period. A poet as much as a composer, he stood in a real, continuous line descending from the earlier troubadour and trouvère traditions, and his own poetry genuinely influenced Geoffrey Chaucer.

Real musicology credits this as the earliest known complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer — though genuine scholarly debate remains over exactly how "cyclic" (unified across its own movements) it is, compared to the fully cyclic Renaissance mass settings Chapter 4 covers next. Machaut was also crucial in developing fixed secular song forms — the ballade, rondeau, and virelai — that would directly shape Renaissance music after him.
