linguistics1-9 Exercise 1: Accent or Dialect? ============================================== (a) loch with final [x] or [k] ACCENT (pronunciation only; same word). (b) wee instead of small DIALECT (vocabulary). (c) I dinnae ken / I don't know DIALECT (vocabulary and grammatical form, with a different pronunciation too, so accent is involved as well). (d) bath with short or long ACCENT (pronunciation only; the same word vowel is pronounced differently in northern and southern England). Test: if the words and grammar stay the same and only the sounds differ, it is an accent. If the words or grammar differ too, it is a dialect. Dialect differences usually come with an accent as well.
