linguistics1-6 Exercise 1: Naming the Relation =============================================== Word relations: couch / sofa synonymy (nearly the same meaning) hot / cold gradable antonymy (opposites on a scale; warm and cool lie in between) alive / dead complementary antonymy (exactly one is true) buy / sell converse (two sides of one transaction) tulip / flower hyponymy (a tulip is a kind of flower; flower is the hypernym) finger / hand meronymy (a finger is a part of a hand) Homonymy or polysemy? bank (money / river) HOMONYMY. The two meanings are unrelated, and the words have different origins. mouth (person / river) POLYSEMY. The river mouth is named by analogy with the person's mouth (the place where something comes out), so the senses are related. bat (animal / cricket) HOMONYMY. The animal and the sports equipment have different origins and no shared meaning. How to decide: ask whether a speaker feels the senses are connected. If a dictionary lists them under one entry, the word is polysemous; if it gives two separate entries, it counts as homonymy.
