linguistics1-10 Exercise 3: Which Aphasia? =========================================== Patient A: "Walk ... dog ... park", slow and effortful, understands everything. BROCA'S APHASIA. Speech is halting and has few grammar words, but comprehension is good. Probable damage: Broca's area, in the left frontal lobe. Patient B: fluent, fast speech that makes little sense ("the thing is going to the place for the with"), and does not understand questions. WERNICKE'S APHASIA. Speech keeps its rhythm and grammar words but lacks content, and comprehension is poor. Probable damage: Wernicke's area, in the left temporal lobe. Caution: real cases are rarely this clean, and the two areas work as part of a wider network. These patterns are the classic textbook picture.
