klingon_grammar1-7 Exercise 3: Heghlu'meH QaQ jajvam ===================================================== Hegh root "die" -lu' group 5 indefinite subject: "one (dies)" -meH group 9 purpose: "in order to" QaQ root "be good" (a verb: qualities are verbs, Chapter 5) jaj root noun "day" -vam noun suffix, "this" (Chapter 3) Heghlu'meH = Hegh-lu'-meH "in order for one to die" jajvam = jaj-vam "this day" QaQ = "is good" Together: "In order for one to die, this day is good" = "Today is a good day to die." Why the two alternatives are not allowed: Hegh-meH-lu' The suffixes must follow group order, and -lu' (group 5) must come before -meH (group 9). Heghlu'meHbe' A rover such as -be' can follow the root or any suffix, except one from group 9. -meH is group 9, so nothing can follow it.
