conlangs1-7 Exercise 2: What Gestuno Teaches ============================================= One possible paragraph. Gestuno gave deaf people from different countries a shared vocabulary of about 1,500 signs, but a vocabulary is not a language. It had almost no grammar, so signers had no agreed way to combine the signs into sentences, and it had no community that used it daily. It was hard to understand when first used. The language that worked, International Sign, came from signers and interpreters who added grammar from their own sign languages and reshaped the signs by using them together. The original design lacked grammar and community. The lesson for a designer: write the grammar, not just the word list, and plan for people to use and change the language.
