conlangs1-7 Exercise 1: Natural or Constructed? ================================================ (a) British Sign Language Natural. A full language. It grew in a Deaf community and has its own grammar. (b) Gestuno as published in 1975 Constructed. A list of about 1,500 signs compiled by a commission, with little grammar. Not yet a full language. (c) Silbo Gomero Natural. A medium shift: Spanish carried by whistling. (d) Solresol Constructed. A designed vocabulary of seven notes, intended as a full language but never with fluent speakers. (e) International Sign as used today It grew out of Gestuno through use by signers and interpreters, who added grammar from natural sign languages. It is best described as a contact or pidgin-like system that developed from a constructed list. The point: "constructed" is about origin, "full language" is about structure and use, and the two come apart.
