conlangs1-6 Exercise 3: A Language-First Plan ============================================== One possible answer. Language idea: A language with no word for "I", only "we", so every statement is made on behalf of a group. The people: A mountain community of herders who share their work and their land. A story event the language requires: A traveller from a valley culture cannot say "I did it" in the mountain language, so she has to find a way to say who is to blame, and the tension of the scene comes from the grammar. The point of the exercise: the language is not decoration. It makes the story needing certain events, as Tolkien described for his own work. Your own plan will differ. Check that the story event could not happen in the same way if the language were English.
