conlangs1-6 Exercise 1: Toy Sound Changes ========================================== Ancestor Daughter 1 (vowels kept) Daughter 2 (vowels lost; k > g) ---------- -------------------------- -------------------------------- mina mina min paka paka pag lala lala lal Why paka becomes pag in daughter 2: Two rules apply in order. First, k becomes g between vowels: pa-k-a gives paga. Then the final vowel is lost: paga gives pag. Check: the order matters. If the final vowel were lost first, k would no longer sit between two vowels and the change to g would not apply, giving pak. This shows why a historical language needs its rules in order, just as real sound changes happen in sequence.
