conlangs1-5 Exercise 3: Culture in Klingon =========================================== Three features that fit a warrior culture: 1. Vocabulary: a rich supply of words for combat, honour, ships and food (Suv "fight", SuvwI' "warrior", majQa' "well done", gagh). 2. Politeness: no everyday word for "please" and no formal versus informal "you". Requests are blunt commands (yISop! "Eat!"). 3. Grammar and greetings: a greeting that means "what do you want?" (nuqneH) and a farewell tied to honour (Qapla' "success"). Something a Klingon speaker would find hard to say: Light social talk about everyday places, such as asking for a cup of tea in a cafe. The published vocabulary is thin there, which is why Klingon Basic Conversation 1 adapted the cafe, shop and hotel to a feast hall, a trading post and quarters. Your own answer will differ. Check that each feature names a fact about the language and links it to a fact about the culture.
