conlangs1-3 Exercise 3: Did Esperanto Fail? ============================================ Universal adoption No. It did not become the world's second language. A living community Yes. It has clubs, meetings, books and online use. Learnability Often reported as much quicker than a natural language, though hard to measure fairly. Stability Yes. The core was fixed in the Fundamento (1905). Native speakers A small number of children grow up speaking it. A two-sentence answer: "Esperanto did not achieve the original dream of universal adoption, but it has a stable core and a living community, which is more than most constructed languages achieve. Whether it failed depends on whether you test it against its founder's biggest hope or against what a constructed language can realistically achieve." Your own wording will differ. Check that your answer uses at least two of the tests and does not rest on speaker numbers alone, which are rough guesses.
