conlangs1-3 Exercise 2: Schematic or Naturalistic? =================================================== (a) One verb ending for all verbs in the present tense Schematic. It comes from a regular system. It helps with producing the language, because there are no forms to memorise. (b) The Latin-derived word shared by French, Spanish and Italian for "house" Naturalistic. It takes a word that natural languages already share. It helps with understanding, because a speaker of those languages recognises it at sight. (c) A prefix that reverses the meaning of any word Schematic. It is a rule of the system. It helps with producing, because one prefix doubles the vocabulary you can build. (d) Spelling changed to match the pronunciation Schematic. The designer imposes a rule. It helps with both: reading aloud is easy, and spelling what you hear is easy. The pattern: schematic choices usually help production, naturalistic choices usually help recognition. Real languages mix both.
