conlangs1-2 Exercise 2: Extending the Toy Scheme ================================================= be- tool -ka cutting -ki striking beka = tool + cutting = "a cutting tool" (a knife) beki = tool + striking = "a striking tool" (a hammer) An object the scheme cannot place: a spoon. A spoon is a tool, but it neither cuts nor strikes. The scheme has no ending for "scooping" or "eating with". To place it, the designer must add a new ending, and then more for fork, bowl, cup and so on. What this shows about a priori languages: The categories must be decided in advance, and the classification is only as good as the designer's picture of the world. Real things overlap and cross categories (a spoon is a tool and a vessel), so the tree keeps needing new branches. This is one reason the philosophical languages grew hard to learn and never became a community's everyday speech. Your own words will differ. Check that your two new words follow the head-plus-ending pattern, and that your unplaceable object really does not fit.
