conlangs1-12 Exercise 3: Reviewing a Design ============================================ Take the "Viaje" sheet from Exercise 1 and run three tests. (a) Relex test. Translate "Mi voli pan" word for word: "I want bread". The word order is English (SVO), the plural is English-style (-s) and the verbs have no marking of their own beyond -is / -os. Result: a partial failure. Improvement: give the language one feature that English lacks, for example a polite suffix on verbs for speaking to strangers. (b) Accidents test. Say each word aloud and check it against Spanish, French and English. "no", "hola", "adio" are fine because they are borrowed on purpose, but "mala" means "bad" in Spanish, which is intended, and "vi" sounds like the English letter V. Improvement: rename "vi" "tu" if the confusion matters. (c) Naming check. "Viaje" means "journey" in Spanish, so the name suits a traveller's language and does not clash with a key word in it. Your own answers will differ. Check that each test is applied to your own sheet and that each failure has a specific change.
