conlangs1-11 Exercise 2: Coining a Meren Word ============================================== Idea: "bridge". 1. Need Speakers cross rivers all the time, and have no word for a crossing built over water. 2. Propose papo. Check: p-a-p-o = pa + po, each (C)V; consonants p are allowed, vowels a and o are allowed; stress PA-po. OK. (Or a compound: merekano "river-tree", a log across the water.) 3. Test Use it in sentences for a few weeks. Test: do listeners understand without explanation, and is it confused with another word? papo is not close to any existing word. 4. Adopt The keeper adds papo to the word list, marked "adopted". 5. Record Date the entry. The core grammar is unchanged. Your own word will differ. Check it against the sound rules (nine consonants, five vowels, (C)V(n), first-syllable stress).
