Time for the café! This chapter teaches you to order, to choose between hot and iced, to say whether you're eating here or taking away, and to pay and say thank you. Almost everything on a Japanese café menu is katakana, so you can read it already. Romaji is shown under every line of Japanese.
① Ordering a Coffee — コーヒーを ください
A:
いらっしゃいませ。
Irasshaimase.

すみません。ホットコーヒーを ひとつ ください。
Sumimasen. Hotto kōhī o hitotsu kudasai.

🍰 Food — たべもの
Most café and restaurant food is borrowed from abroad, so you can read the menu: it's all katakana.

🔢 Counting Small Things — 〜つ
For small items such as drinks and cakes, use the all-purpose counter 〜つ. These are the native Japanese numbers, and they are irregular: learn 1 to 5 first.

How to Order: Item + Number + ください
The pattern is: item を number ください. コーヒーを ひとつ ください (one coffee, please), ケーキを ふたつ おねがいします (two cakes, please). You can leave the number out for one: コーヒーを ください.

Real Japanese Tip — No Tipping and Free Water
You don't tip in Japan: the price on the menu is what you pay. In most cafés and restaurants a glass of water (おみず) or tea arrives free as soon as you sit down. And you often pay at the register (レジ) on your way out, rather than at the table.
すみません Calls the Waiter
In Japanese cafés there is no need to wait to catch someone's eye: you can say すみません in a clear voice, or press the call button on the table (よびだしボタン), to ask for service. It's not rude: it is the normal way to ask for something.
ください or おねがいします?
〜を ください means "please give me…" and is the standard way to order. 〜を おねがいします means "I'd like… please" and is slightly softer. Both are fine, and you can use either at any café.
おいしい and ごちそうさまでした
おいしい is "delicious". Saying おいしかったです ("it was delicious") and ごちそうさまでした after your meal is polite and always welcome.
Kanji Spotlight — 食 飲 水
食 (shoku, ta(beru)) means eat, food, and 飲 (in, no(mu)) means drink: in 食べます and 飲みます. 水 (sui, mizu) is water, as in お水. You'll see 食 on every restaurant sign. Have a look at them: 食 ▸ · 飲 ▸ · 水 ▸
