Small Tsu
Hiragana 3
Chapter 1 Β· Small Tsu
πΈ Small γ£ β The Silent Beat
Hiragana 1 gave you the 46 basic characters, and Hiragana 2 added the voiced ones. Hiragana 3 completes the set with the three things left: the small γ£ (today), long vowels, and the combined sounds such as γγ and γγ . Let's start with the smallest character of all. Romaji is shown for everything.
βΈοΈ What Small γ£ Does β δΏι³
The small γ£ (sokuon) is the same shape as γ€ but written about half the size, low and to the right. It has no sound of its own. It means: pause for one beat, then say the next consonant again. In romaji, it shows up as a doubled consonant.
βοΈ Short or Long? β A Meaning Changes
Without the small γ£ these are different words, so the pause matters.
| Without γ£ | Say it | English | With γ£ | Say it | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γγ¨ | oto | sound | γγ£γ¨ | otto | husband |
| γγ | saka | slope | γγ£γ | sakka | writer |
| γγ¦ | kite | come! | γγ£γ¦ | kitte | stamp |
| γγ¨ | moto | origin | γγ£γ¨ | motto | more |
π Where γ£ Appears
- Before k, s, t and p: the sounds you see in γγ£γγ (kk), γγ£γ (ss), γΎγ£γ¦ (tt) and γγ£γ±γ (pp). These are by far the most common.
- Before ch, sh and ts: the same rule, written tch, ssh and tts in romaji, as in zasshi (γγ£γ).
- Never at the start of a word, and never before a vowel, n, m or r in native Japanese words.
- At the end of an exclamation: γγ£οΌ ("Oh!") and γγ£οΌ ("What?!") end with a small γ£ that shows a sudden, sharp stop.
