Chapter 6 · Weather & Seasons

☀️ Weather & Seasons — Időjárás és évszakok

Weather is the universal conversation starter, in Hungary as in Scotland. This chapter teaches you to describe the weather and the temperature, to name the four seasons and say what you do in each, and to talk about the forecast. ☁️ The Weather — Az időjárás

Most weather sentences are short and have no verb or just van: Hideg van ("It is cold"). Others use a verb: süt a nap ("the sun shines"), esik az eső ("the rain falls").

🌱 The Four Seasons — Az évszakok

"In spring" and "in autumn" use -val / -vel (the v melts into the last consonant, as in Chapter 3): tavasz + val = tavasszal, ősz + vel = ősszel. "In summer" and "in winter" use -on / -en: nyáron, télen.

Liking the Seasons: A Definite Object Szeretem a nyarat uses the definite form szeretem, because "the summer" (a nyarat) is a specific thing. Look at how two of the seasons change their stem before the -t: nyár → nyarat and tél → telet. Learn them as pairs.

springSzeretem a tavaszt.SEH-reh-tehm aw TAW-vawst+ t
summerSzeretem a nyarat.SEH-reh-tehm aw NYAW-rawtnyár → nyarat: the vowel shortens
autumnSzeretem az őszt.SEH-reh-tehm awz EUUST+ t
winterSzeretem a telet.SEH-reh-tehm aw TEH-lehttél → telet: the vowel shortens

🌡️ Temperature — Hőmérséklet

Hungary uses Celsius. Say Húsz fok van for 20 degrees, and mínusz before the number for below zero: Mínusz öt fok van. The word fok stays singular after a number.

Real Hungarian Tip — Szép Idő Van, Ugye? Ugye? (UD-yeh) is a handy "isn't it?" tag that you add to the end of any sentence: Szép idő van, ugye? ("Nice weather, isn't it?"), Hideg van, ugye? It invites the other person to agree, and it is the perfect opener for small talk with a neighbour at the bus stop.
Nap: Sun and Day Nap means both sun and day: Süt a nap ("the sun is shining") and hétköznap ("weekday"). Hungarian doesn't mind: context sorts it out, just as with hét (week, seven).
Vénasszonyok Nyara — Old Women's Summer A warm, sunny spell in early autumn is called vénasszonyok nyara ("the summer of old women"), the Hungarian name for what English calls an Indian summer. The phrase is typical of Hungarian: vivid, a little teasing, and made of everyday words.
Hot Summers and Cold Winters Hungary has a continental climate, with hot summers that often pass 30 degrees and cold winters that can go well below zero. A visitor from Scotland will notice that summers are warmer and winters sharper, so a good phrase to keep ready is Nagyon meleg van! in July and Nagyon hideg van! in January.
