Chapter 3 · Making Plans & Invitations

🎟️ Making Plans & Invitations — Tervek és meghívások

Now that you can describe your routine and your hobbies, let's make plans. This chapter teaches you to invite someone, accept or decline politely, agree a time and a place, and talk about the future. It also introduces -val / -vel ("with", "by") and keeps practising the definite conjugation from Chapter 2. Every dialog line has a respelling beneath it.

🎭 Places and Events — Programok

"To the cinema" is again an ending on the place: -ba / -be ("into") or -ra / -re ("onto"), the same two series as in Chapter 12 of Basic 1.

🤝 "With": the Ending -val / -vel — Eszközhatározó

The ending -val / -vel means with (a person) or by (a means of transport). The v melts into the last consonant of the word, so you get a doubled consonant: busz + val = busszal, Péter + vel = Péterrel. After a vowel the v stays.

with …HungarianSay itHow it forms
with AnnaAnnávalAWN-naw-vawlAnna + val (final a → á)
with my frienda barátommalAW BAW-raw-tom-mawlbarátom + val → mm
with PéterPéterrelPAY-tehr-rehlPéter + vel → rr
by busbusszalBUS-sawlbusz + val → ssz
by trainvonattalVO-nawt-tawlvonat + val → tt
by carautóvalOW-toh-vawlafter a vowel: stays v
with milktejjelTEHY-yehltej + vel → jj (from Basic 1)
with the cardkártyávalKAHR-tyah-vawlkártya + val (final a → á)
The Rule in One Line Take the word, then add -val (back vowels) or -vel (front vowels). If the word ends in a consonant, the v becomes the same consonant (vonat → vonattal). If it ends in -a or -e, that vowel lengthens (Anna → Annával).

🔮 The Future — A jövő idő

Hungarian often uses the present tense for the future when a time word makes it clear: Holnap moziba megyek ("Tomorrow I'm going to the cinema"). For a stronger future, use fog + infinitive: Moziba fogok menni. And "I'll be" is a separate verb: leszek.

Real Hungarian Tip — Meghívlak! My Treat Meghívlak (MEHG-heev-lawk) literally means "I invite you", and it is what a Hungarian says when they are paying: Meghívlak egy kávéra ("I'll treat you to a coffee"). Argue politely, then accept: it is warm and generous, not a formal gesture. The ending -lak / -lek is the same special "I → you" ending as in Szeretlek.
Ráérni Is a Prefix Verb Ráérni ("to have time") is a prefix verb, just like felkelni in Chapter 1. In a neutral sentence it is ráérek, but with a question word the prefix moves behind the verb: Mikor érsz rá? It is a good everyday example of the rule you learned last time.
Találkozzunk! — Let's Meet Találkozzunk …! ("Let's meet …!") is a form you will hear all the time when arranging things. It is built from találkozni plus a special ending -zzunk, meaning "let us". You do not need to learn the full pattern yet: use it as a set phrase with a time and a place: Találkozzunk hétkor a mozi előtt.
Gyere velünk! Gyere velünk! ("Come with us!") is the informal invitation, with gyere ("come!", an imperative) and velünk ("with us", from -vel plus the "us" ending). The formal version is Jöjjön velünk!
