Your Daily Routine

German Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 1 · Your Daily Routine

⏰ Your Daily Routine — Mein Alltag

Describe your day from waking up to going to bed, and ask other people about theirs. Course 1 taught you to state facts; now you start telling small stories, using times, "first… then…" words, and a new kind of verb that splits in two.

🔀 Splitting Verbs and Telling the Story — Trennbare Verben

Many everyday verbs are made of a small prefix plus a verb. In a normal sentence the verb stays in second place and the prefix goes to the very end.

InfinitiveIn a sentenceSay itEnglish
aufstehenIch stehe um sieben Uhr auf.ikh SHTAY-uh oom ZEE-ben OOR owfI get up at seven.
einkaufenDann kaufe ich ein.dahn KOW-fuh ikh INEThen I do the shopping.
anziehenIch ziehe meine Jacke an.ikh TSEE-uh MY-nuh YAH-kuh AHNI put on my jacket.
aufräumenAm Abend räume ich die Wohnung auf.ahm AH-bent ROY-muh ikh dee VOH-noong OWFIn the evening I tidy the flat.
zurückkommenIch komme um sechs Uhr zurück.ikh KOM-uh oom ZEKS OOR tsoo-RÜKI come back at six.
"First… then…" — and the Verb Stays Second Words like zuerst (first), dann (then), danach (after that) and später (later) can start a sentence. When one of them does, the verb still has to come next, so the ich moves behind it: Dann gehe ich nach Hause, not Dann ich gehe…. Compare English "Then I go" — here the order is "Then go I". It feels odd for a week, and then it doesn't.
Times and "halb" Times work as in German Basic Conversation 1, Chapter 7: um sieben Uhr = at seven o'clock. One trap: halb sieben is half past six (30 minutes towards seven), not half past seven. So um halb eins = 12:30 and um halb sieben = 6:30. In the last dialog, speaker A gets up at halb sieben, which is 6:30.

Real German Tip — "Ich mache mich fertig" You'll hear sich fertig machen (to get ready) a lot when people describe their mornings: Ich mache mich fertig (ikh MAKH-uh mikh FER-tikh) = "I'm getting ready". The mich is a reflexive word ("myself") — a topic for a later chapter, but this one phrase is very useful to have as it is.
Real German Tip — Being on Time Being pünktlich is generally valued in Germany, in work and in private life, so being a few minutes late without saying anything can come across as rude. If you're running late, a quick message like Ich komme etwas später ("I'll be a bit late") is the polite thing to send.
