Platform & Marketplace Comparison

Selling Digital Templates
Course 1 · Chapter 9 · Platform & Marketplace Comparison

A finished, well-priced template still needs somewhere to actually be sold. The three main options trade off control and audience in genuinely different ways.

At a Glance

Platform Built-in Audience Fees Barrier to Entry
Gumroad None — you bring your own traffic Lower Low — open signup
Etsy Strong marketplace browse/search traffic Higher — listing plus transaction fees Low — open signup
Notion's official template gallery Very strong, but Notion-specific and high-intent Varies Highest — a submission/curation process

The Three Options, In Detail

Gumroad

A direct-sales platform built specifically for digital products, with lower fees and simple automatic delivery. Its own weakness is real: there's essentially no built-in browsing audience — you're responsible for driving your own traffic to it.

Etsy

A genuine marketplace with real built-in search and browse traffic from shoppers already looking for unique/handmade and digital goods. In exchange, the combined listing-plus-transaction fee structure is higher, and templates compete in a marketplace crowded with every other digital-product category, not just templates.

Notion's Official Template Gallery

A genuinely distinct, high-trust discovery channel specific to Notion templates — it's literally where Notion itself points users looking for templates. Unlike Gumroad or Etsy's open-listing model, it involves a submission and curation process, structurally similar to Merch by Amazon's own application-gated system from Print-on-Demand Design. Being featured there provides very strong, highly relevant buyer intent, but this channel only applies to Notion templates — the other three categories from Chapter 2 need Gumroad or Etsy instead.

These platforms aren't mutually exclusive The same non-exclusivity finding Print-on-Demand Design established for its own platforms applies here: a template can be listed on Gumroad and Etsy simultaneously, and a Notion template can additionally be submitted to the official gallery as a parallel discovery channel, not a replacement for the others.
Fees and approval processes change Each platform's specific fee schedule, and Notion's own gallery submission requirements, are set and adjusted directly by the platforms. Check current terms before listing or applying anywhere.
