Why the comedy is affectionate: the contest takes itself seriously and invites laughter, so audiences can enjoy the songs and the joke together. It has stereotypes and a ritual of scores that are easy to parody. And most parodies are made by people who like the contest, so the comedy has not harmed it, and may have helped it.
