eusong1-10, Exercise 3: What kind of thing is Eurovision? Model answer (about 150 words): Eurovision is all three, but the music is the reason people watch. As a music contest, it has produced songs that outlasted their results, such as "Volare" and "Waterloo" (Chapter 5). As a television event, its shared live format and points ceremony have kept it going for decades (Chapters 3 and 4). As a mirror of politics, it reflects who may take part and who votes for whom, and it has been touched by the war in Ukraine (Chapter 7). Against the music view: many winners are forgotten. Against the television view: the format is only interesting because countries compete. Against the politics view: neighbour voting has other explanations, such as taste and diaspora. A good answer takes a position, gives a point on each side, and keeps claims that need checking separate.
