euesa1-7, Exercise 1: The first Europeans in space

Model answer:

The first Europeans flew as guests of the two superpowers. The Soviet Union invited citizens of friendly countries to fly on its missions (the Intercosmos programme), and France made its own agreement. For Western European countries outside such deals, the American Space Shuttle was the route.

The Hungarian was Bertalan Farkas, who flew on Soyuz 36 to the Salyut 6 space station in May 1980 and became the first Hungarian in space (check the date).
