esperanto_story1-7, Exercise 1: The UNESCO resolutions Model answer (check the texts): What they did: 1954 (Montevideo) noted the results Esperanto had achieved in international intellectual exchange and the rapprochement of peoples, and allowed cooperation with the Universal Esperanto Association. 1985 (Sofia) recognised the aims of Esperanto and encouraged member states to consider introducing its study. What they did not do: make Esperanto an official or working language of UNESCO or any state, require any government to teach it, or give it funding. Supporter's description: "UNESCO formally recognised Esperanto's value to international understanding." Sceptic's description: "A courtesy resolution that changed nothing in practice." Fair statement: formal recognition of the organisation and its aims, without adoption.
