esperanto_story1-5, Exercise 2: UEA and SAT compared Model answer (check the details): UEA (1908): believed that the language should be neutral and open to everyone, so it kept out of party politics. Aim: to link individuals and to show that Esperanto works for travel, culture and business. Risk: neutrality could mean saying nothing about injustice, and it depended on governments and the public thinking the language useful. SAT (1921): believed that neutrality was an illusion in a world of class conflict and that the language should serve working people and be "anational", not tied to nation-states. Aim: to give workers an international means of communication and publishing. Risk: association with the left made the movement a target of suspicion in some countries (Chapter 6) and divided it from those who wanted to stay out of politics. Shared ground: both used the same language and many members belonged to both; both held congresses and published in Esperanto. Care: describe the two as positions on how to use the language, and avoid saying which was right.
