Model answer:

Centre pieces (6): one on each face, fixed to the core, turning on their axes but never moving relative to each other, so they define each face's colour.
Edge pieces (12): two coloured faces each, between the corners; they move as faces turn.
Corner pieces (8): three coloured faces each, at the corners; they also move as faces turn.

The pieces are held by their shapes and the core, not glue or screws. Details of construction should be checked.
