huinventors1-10, Exercise 1: Tracing a route Model answer (the ballpoint pen): Idea: Bíró, a Budapest journalist, saw that newspaper ink dried quickly and wanted a pen that used it, with a rolling ball at the tip. Earlier ballpoint patents, such as Loud's in 1888, existed but did not work well for writing. Build: Bíró and his brother György, a chemist, made a working pen and patented it in Hungary in the 1930s, with a British patent in 1938. Route: he left for Argentina around 1940 and patented it again in 1943. Success: a British businessman acquired the rights, and pens were made in Britain from the mid-1940s under the name Biro, with Bic and others later making it a mass product. Any invention from the course traced through people and places is acceptable. Details should be checked.
