hufolk1-9, Exercise 3: Authenticity questions Model answer (an embroidered blouse sold in a Budapest market): 1. Who made it, and why? If a skilled embroiderer made it by hand in a regional style, it is revival or craft work for sale; if a factory printed the pattern, it is a commercial copy. 2. Does it keep its context? A blouse sold as a souvenir has lost the context of village dress, but one made for wear at festivals may keep part of it. 3. Is it honest about itself? A label naming the region, the maker and the method is honest; a claim that it is "ancient" or "traditional" without support is not. Verdict: good craft sold as revival is not kitsch; a printed copy sold as authentic is closer to it.
