hufolk1-8, Exercise 1: Bartók and Kodály Model answer: From the early twentieth century Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály travelled to villages, recorded singers on wax cylinders and wrote the tunes down. Their collecting matters because it showed that the older village repertoire differed from the "Hungarian songs" of town salons and popular bands, gave scholars a body of evidence to study, and later fed the táncház revival and music teaching. It is also an example of record in the sense of Chapter 1, with the caution that collecting both preserves and fixes what it collects. Dates and numbers should be checked.
