Exercise 2 - Original, restored, reconstructed (sample answer) Original: the actual stones and timbers from the period of building. Restored: original fabric repaired, cleaned or strengthened, with some replacement. Reconstructed: rebuilt after loss, from drawings, photographs, excavation or guesswork. It can be accurate, but it is a new building. A guidebook date can mislead because one date is given for a building that may have an original of one century, a major rebuilding in another and a reconstruction in a third. In Hungary the dates often differ widely, because of repeated destruction (1241, 1686, 1944-45). Ask which date is meant.
