Exercise 1 - Reading a building (sample answer) Example building: a Victorian parish church. 1. What is it for? Worship, and also a landmark for the community. 2. What style? Gothic Revival: pointed arches, a spire, tall windows. 3. Who built it and when? Check the plaque, a local history page or the parish website. Note the architect and the date of opening. 4. What is original? Look for seams: new stone beside old, replaced windows, a plaque about restoration. Say which parts you think are original and why. A good answer separates what you observed from what you looked up.
