For: Hungary won the tournament with clear, organised football and showed the tactical ideas (fluid positions, deep-lying centre-forward) that later beat stronger opposition, and they were part of a run of about thirty games without defeat.

Against: the 1952 Olympic football event was contested largely by amateur or state-amateur sides, so it was not a full test against the leading professional teams (and the Soviet bloc sides were stronger than usual). The gold is better treated as an early sign than as proof.
