It rests on a remembered remark and on later defeats that fit the story after the event. A careful writer should present it as folklore ("it is said that..."), not as a documented statement, and should say that no contemporary record is cited. Other acceptable choices: Puskas juggling in the warm-up; the adjustable-stud boots in Bern.
