defilmtv1-5, Exercise 2: The rabbit films Model answer: In December 1965 a leading party meeting attacked cultural life, and about a dozen DEFA films (check the number) were banned or held back as too critical or pessimistic about life in the East. They are called the "rabbit films" (Kaninchenfilme) after one of them, The Rabbit Is Me (1965), directed by Kurt Maetzig, which was not shown until 1990. Trace of Stones (1966), by Frank Beyer, was pulled after a few days and also reached audiences much later. They matter because they show the limits on what East German film could say, the cost to careers, and the loss of talented people.
