defilmtv1-10, Exercise 3: Two pasts Model answer (about 150 words): Similarity: in both cases the screens first looked away, and later asked questions, with the public broadcasters and the generation that came after leading much of the discussion. Films about each past were also at risk of simplifying it: through avoidance in the 1950s, or through nostalgia (Ostalgie) in the case of the East. Difference: the Nazi past is dominated by guilt and responsibility for crimes, while the East German past raises questions of survival, complicity, surveillance and loss, so viewers may feel quite different things about each. The East also had its own censored cinema, whose banned films reached audiences only after 1990. A good answer names a film for each past and keeps claims that need checking separate.
