defilmtv1-10, Exercise 1: A one-paragraph history Model answer: After 1945 a few rubble films such as The Murderers Are Among Us looked at the ruins and the guilt, but in the 1950s West German cinema mostly turned to escapism and soldiers-as-victims, with a few exceptions such as The Bridge (Chapter 4). The younger generation of New German Cinema then challenged their parents' silence, in films such as Fassbinder's and von Trotta's (Chapter 6). The American Holocaust series of 1979 was followed by Edgar Reitz's Heimat in 1984, which told the century through one village (Chapter 8). After 1990 the past became a normal subject for drama, from Downfall to Generation War, alongside films about the East such as The Lives of Others (Chapter 9). Any accurate example from each of the four chapters is acceptable. Check the dates in a reference.
