Two reasons (any two): viewers in several countries, so rules had to be understood at a glance; the programme crossed language barriers, so the comedy had to be visual; short, simple games kept the pace up.

Limit on a general description: the exact rules and point values changed between series, and the Joker had different names and details in different languages and years. For a specific episode, check the rules of that series.
