Exercise 2.3 - Solution Town twinning (jumelage) is a lasting partnership between a town in one country and a town in another, with exchange visits between schools, clubs and councils. It was widespread in western Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, especially between French and German towns. It is context, not proof, because the link between twinning and the show is an interpretation that later writers have emphasised. It shows the mood in which a cross-border town contest made sense, but it does not show that twinning caused the show.
