Hip-hop reached France from the United States in the early 1980s through records, radio and television. It took root in the suburbs of Paris and in cities such as Marseille, giving young people a way to describe their lives in their own language. Two acts from different cities: IAM from Marseille, known for complex, historically minded rap and the album L'ecole du micro d'argent; and Supreme NTM from Saint-Denis near Paris, known for hard-edged social commentary. MC Solaar, known for wordplay, is another possible example.
