Weakness: many were close adaptations of English or American songs, so the music was borrowed and French pop risked being a copy of an international style.
Strength: putting the songs into French, sometimes with new words, made the style available to a French audience, built a home market and artists, and the best yeye songs are not mere copies.

Either side of each may be argued if the reason is given.
