Useful: critics spoke of clarity, restraint and a taste for colour over argument, and the idea captures a real contrast with the German tradition that dominated concert halls, so it helps a listener notice what is distinctive.
Careful: it was partly a reaction against German music and partly a claim about national character, and Debussy and Ravel were very different composers who each borrowed from Spain, Russia and Asia as well as from French tradition.

Any one reason of each kind is acceptable.
