Any two of these: chords were used for their colour rather than to lead to the next chord, and chains of similar chords moved in parallel; composers used scales from older church music, whole-tone patterns and non-European music, which loosened the sense of a fixed home key; instruments were combined for their tone, so the orchestra became a palette; and the music suggested scenes rather than building an argument out of themes.
